Let’s Play Pretend

Poetry

Black background, white theater masks, white text: “Let’s Play Pretend”

Adored
By no one
And not ever
Born into nothing
With no one around
Unwanted
Love I had to earn
But I was unsuccessful
In keeping it going
Never linear
Only here and there
When I give
When I force myself
To show up
In a smile
That burns my cheeks
Tires my face
And Heart
Tired of pretending
But always pretending
They can never know
If they do
Will they stay
The next time I show up
And pretend?
